Un browser moderno per Haiku

Haiku ogni giorno fa un passo avanti e naturalmente anche il mio uso quotidiano del sistema aumenta. Per alcune cose utilizzo i servizi offerti da Google ad esempio per le mail, i documenti e gli album di picasa. Da circa un mese non è più possibile visualizzare gli album fotografici su picasa nè con Bezilla nè con Arora evidentemente è cambiato qualcosa. update: Humdinger ha scoperto che il non funzionamento è dovuto a gnash, basta disinstallare il plugin per far andare Picasa. Gmail continua a funzionare senza problemi mentre se uno accede a Google Documents riceve il seguente messaggio:

Google Docs will be phasing out support for older browsers starting
March 1, 2010...

We've detected that your web browser will be affected by the changes.

Naturalmente Google Documents è un servizio molto utile sulla nostra piattaforma oltre a fornire un buon word-processor consente la collaborazione online ad esempio posso condividere le traduzioni del corso di C++ realizzato da DarkWyrm con Francesca Mora che le revisiona.

Ho così scritto alla mailing list del progetto per venire a sapere cosa bolle in pentola per quanto riguarda la necessità di un browser moderno, la risposta di Stephan Asmuss rivela aspetti non conosciuti ed annuncia l'arrivo di un pur se elementare primo browser nativo basato sul WebKit. Eccovi la mail di Stephan:

Thanks to the dedication of Maxime Simone, our Google Summer of Code student who worked on the WebKit port to Haiku last summer, that port has been kept in sync with the WebKit source code. Recently, I have started to look into various issues with the port and have now a browser shell that is capable of rendering the Haiku website without visual errors.

Currently I am stuck at making input fields work, but I hope to overcome the obstacles as I encounter them. Unfortunately, I don't know how much longer I will be able to work on this port. If all goes well, I hope to come up with a NetPositive style browser. I.e. no features except Downloads window and browsing history as well as other persistent storage needed at the bare minimum.

Help would be much appreciated, but that requires my changes to become visible first. For the moment, I am struggling with the Gitorious repository that was setup for the Haiku port, but I have gained commit access and should be able to sort this out soon.
